Enacted by enabling legislation in 1923, KFD is considered a fire district because we are an autonomous public entity, independent from the Town of South Kingstown or any surrounding towns or villages, created for the purpose of providing fire protection and other related emergency response services. Unlike a municipal fire department, we are not funded through the Town, and we collect our own fire taxes (separate from property taxes) and file our own financial reports.
One-fifth of Rhode Island’s population is served by a fire district.
