On August 3rd, 2017, members of the Kingston Fire District, Union Fire District, the South Kingstown Decontamination Team as well as other local, state and federal partners participated in OPERATION DOWNPOUR, an emergency decontamination exercise.  The drill was designed at the request of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) and the University of Hertfordshire (United Kingdom), in partnership with local first responders to examine different emergency response procedures for decontaminating/cleaning large numbers of people who have potentially been exposed to toxic materials. The results of the exercise and research conducted as a part of the study could help to improve improve emergency response decontamination practices worldwide. Operation Downpour involved the rapid decontamination of nearly 100 volunteer victims who had been exposed to simulated chemicals.
