3-24-14 | 2217 | Engine 8, Engine 9, Ladder 2, Chief 8, and Chief 9 responded to a reported structure fire on Parkwood Drive. First arriving companies reported nothing showing from the exterior of a 1 1/2 story wood-frame structure and proceeded to make an interior investigation. L2’s crew found fire in the back of the house around the wood stove. L2’s crew was able to knock down the bulk of the fire with a single water can. E8’s officer made entry though the rear patio and also used a water can to help extinguish the fire as E8 backstep pulled a line. The fire was completely extinguished with just 2 water cans within approx. 2 minutes of arriving on scene. Overhaul and ventilation immediately took place to preserve and protect the house and belongings. All items involved in the fire were removed from the house and no extension was found. KFD was assisted by the following UFD units: Engine 22, Chief 5, and Chief 7.
At the time of the ignition of the fire, all 4 occupants of the house were asleep. At some point during the beginning of the growth phase, the smoke detector in the hallway activated. This awoke and alerted the male occupant who was then able to get his wife and 2 infants out of the house before calling 911. Smoke detectors save lives.
